A consortium of foundations, predominantly based in California, have joined forces to establish a fund that will enhance the role of public schools in fostering civic leadership and democratic involvement.
Known as the California Thriving Youth Initiative, this multiyear project is designed to support the learning, leadership, and overall well-being of adolescents across the state. Kathryn Bradley, the director of the Purpose of Education Fund at the Stuart Foundation, emphasizes the importance of creating an environment where young people, especially students of color, can actively engage in civic matters both within and beyond the confines of public schools.
The initiative was kickstarted by the Stuart Foundation with an initial investment of $30 million, which will be managed by the California Community Foundation based in Los Angeles. Jesse Hahnel from the Crankstart Foundation, another participating organization, underscored the significance of youth participation in democracy, emphasizing that young individuals have a substantial stake in the outcomes of elections that will impact them for years to come.
Despite the long-lasting implications of governmental policies on young people, statistics have shown that they historically exhibit lower voting rates compared to older demographics. In the 2020 elections, only 47% of 18- to 24-year-olds in California cast their votes, highlighting the need for increased engagement and education. However, there has been a positive trend in recent years, with more young voters turning out at the polls.
