So, apparently, the U.S. Supreme Court is diving back into the whole culture wars thing. They’re looking at a clash between school boards and parents over school curriculum. The school board in Montgomery County, Maryland, decided to include LGBTQ+ storybooks in elementary school classes.
And well, some parents weren’t happy about it. One of them, Grace Morrison, was really upset because her daughter, who has Down syndrome, was in a class with LGBTQ+ books. She thought it was a bit much for her kid.
But then, the school board kinda struggled with all the parents wanting to opt-out of these classes. Like, where do you put all these opt-out kids? And for how long? It’s a real headache, you know?
Parents were all fired up, with like a thousand of them showing up to a school board meeting. And then there was this kid, Nick, who was like, why do you hate LGBTQ books so much? It’s not like they’re hurting you.
The parents against the books say the Supreme Court has always been on their side when it comes to guiding their kids’ values. And forcing these books in public school? That’s a no-go, violating the free exercise of religion.
But, like, how do schools decide what topics to teach? Can parents opt-out of stuff like evolution or history classes about equality? It’s a tough call.
The Supreme Court usually lets schools decide on the curriculum. They don’t usually step in unless kids are being pressured into religious beliefs. And the court might side with the parents this time.
So, who should get to decide what goes in school lessons? The schools or the judges? The Supreme Court might just shake things up this time.
