Third graders at Alpha Cornerstone Academy are getting some extra help in their reading skills from Ignite Reading tutors. These tutors spend 15 minutes every day focusing on phonics and other basic reading skills with the students. The school has seen great improvement in the students’ reading levels, with almost all of them now reading at a third-grade level by the end of the school year.
High-impact tutoring is proving to be effective in helping students improve their literacy skills, especially in early grades. With the right approach, both online and in-person tutoring can yield impressive results. Ignite Reading, an Oakland-based public benefit corporation, is one of the organizations providing this valuable service to schools like Alpha Cornerstone Academy in San Jose.
California has the opportunity to lead the way in implementing high-impact tutoring programs, thanks to the availability of state funding. Up to 40 districts and charter schools have the chance to design their own tutoring programs, with support from various state agencies. By prioritizing tutoring and following successful models from other states, California can make a significant impact on student learning outcomes.
