Former President Barack Obama sent a special message to the inaugural class of the new Black Honors College at California State University, Sacramento. This groundbreaking institution, launched in August, is aiming to become one of the most respected historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) in the country. Led by Sac State President Luke Wood, the college is designed to serve students interested in Black history, life, and culture with a focus on productivity and excellence.

Creating a Community of Excellence

Students in the Black Honors College are required to attend weekly study hours and participate actively in 80% of college events and programs. These programs include seminars on economic empowerment, self-determination, and courageous leadership. All general education courses will be taken within the college, representing every major offered at Sac State.

Unique Curriculum and Faculty

The curriculum is reflective of students’ lives and experiences, with a focus on Black history, culture, and community. Faculty members with a proven success record in teaching and serving Black students are part of this unique learning experience. Transfer students are required to take specialized minors in fields like real estate and development or health services to ensure upward socioeconomic mobility.

Impactful Teaching and Learning

One of the professors teaching at the Black Honors College is Ayanna Yonemura, a professor of ethnic and African American studies. She plans to use the concentrated environment and smaller class sizes to provide an immersive experience in Black culture and history. STEM professors like James Reede are also contributing their expertise to develop a curriculum that centers on Black life, history, and culture.

Community Building and Future Growth

As the Black Honors College welcomes students and professors, the spirit of the Black campus community is skyrocketing. Applications from Black freshmen are up by 20%, while Black transfer student rates have increased by 43%. Fundraising efforts are underway to support the growing demands of the college, with plans to increase enrollment numbers to 1,000-2,000 students.

The Black Honors College at Sac State is not only transforming the educational landscape but also creating a safe haven for students who identify as Black. With a commitment to excellence and community building, this institution is paving the way for a brighter future for Black students in the West and Midwest.
