BCIU opens new early learning center in Reading
The Centre Avenue facility has seven classrooms and serves more than 150 children through three early childhood programs.

The Berks County Intermediate Unit opened a new early childhood learning center at 2101 Centre Avenue in Reading, Pennsylvania, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and open house on Thursday, Oct. 22. The center serves more than 150 students through Early Intervention, Head Start and Pre-K Counts programs.
BCIU said the facility was designed to support young children’s development and family engagement. Its opening adds a dedicated space for early learning and services for families in Berks County.
What the center offers
The center includes seven classrooms, a therapy and mobility room, and an outdoor playground. BCIU Assistant Director of Early Childhood & Student Services Dr. Christi Weitzel gave an overview of the building and the programs and services available there during the opening event.
The programs at the site span early intervention, preschool and Head Start services. BCIU Executive Director Dr. Jill Hackman said the facility would provide a place for young learners to grow and learn. The center’s more than 150 students are the children served across those programs, according to BCIU.
Partners behind the project
BCIU Board President Gary McEwen said the project required the work and partnership of multiple people and organizations. During the ceremony, Hackman recognized the BCIU Board of Directors for backing the project from its planning stage through completion, as well as the staff members who prepared the facility.
The organization also credited the BCIU Education Foundation Board of Trustees and property partner Michael Fromm, who also serves as a foundation trustee and campaign chair. AEM Architects, Dolan Construction, Fidevia LLC and Devopar Consulting contributed to the project. State Sen. Judy Schwank presented a certificate of recognition, and a citation honoring the opening was presented on behalf of state Rep. Johanny Cepeda-Freytiz.
