So I’m here to tell you about Louise Simpson, who runs Mark Twain Union Elementary School District in Angles Camp, close to Yosemite, and how she’s all fired up about the state’s rules on how to spend the extra learning cash.
Not really sure why this matters, but here’s the scoop.
Guess what? The Expanded Learning Opportunities Program is supposed to give kids more chances to learn and grow, but it’s kind of a pain in the butt with its long hours and extra days of school.
Seems like a good idea, but for small rural schools like Louise’s, it’s a tough sell.
Here’s the deal: her students spend hours on the bus, so adding more school time just ain’t happening.
So, lots of kids who could use the help end up getting left behind.
Louise’s school is struggling with math and reading skills, and she thinks she can fix it if she could just use the money she has more flexibly.
But the rules are strict, and she’s ready to fight for a change to help her students succeed.
Let’s see if the lawmakers will listen and make things right for these small rural schools.
